When designing your nursery, it's easiest to first choose the baby crib bedding. So you've chosen the whole nursery decor, right down to the stuffed animals that will sit on the dresser... but aren't you forgetting something? When choosing baby bedding there are a lot of things to consider, so make your choice carefully, and keep these things in mind:
- You baby needs to be comfortable, so choose something soft. Cotton is a natural choice, but look for 100% cotton instead of blends. Knit cotton or flannel are both great choices, but higher-thread-count woven cotton is an option, too.
- Caring for a new baby is very time-consuming and you won't have time for spot treatments or dry cleaning - so make sure you buy a bedding set that you can wash in the machine!
- To ensure the safety of your baby, makes sure that your crib bedding fits the crib mattress tightly. If your sheets don't fit as well as you'd like, but a set of elastic straps that go under the mattress and make the crib sheet fit more tightly.
- Before buying a bedding set, decide if you really need one. If you want the set to complete the nursery's decor then it mioght still make sense, but soft bedding including comforters should be removed from the crib when your baby is sleeping. So if you are trying to save money, consider buying individual pieces rather than a full bedding set. Many people buy bedding sets because all the pieces coordinate, but buying separates can reward those with creativity.
- And lastly, when you've taken care of all the more important concerns, consider the look of the bedding, and how it will coordinate with the rest of the nursery.
When considering how much you spend, think about the long term. It's possible to use the same crib bedding for quite a few years by buying a convertible crib or a toddler bed (make sure it uses standard-sized crib sheets). If you're just starting your family and think you might have more children, try gender neutral baby bedding like the Vintage 4 piece crib set, so that you don't have to keep buying new bedding. But if you love to redecorate, then you might want to buy something lower-quality and less expensive. In any case, keep extra sets of sheets on hand, in case of emergency!
