A baby's baptism or christening is a once-in-a-lifetime event. It is the very first step in their spiritual life. Since the baby won’t have any first-hand memories of this special day, it’s up to the parents, godparents and family members to create lasting memories for them.

There are always the popular items that are known to make treasured keepsakes, but there are many other ideas that might get overlooked. For example, saving one of the invitations that were mailed to guests will make a wonderful momento to be placed in a special scrapbook.

Here is a list of some other baptism and christening items that can be used as memorabeliacreating treasured memories for years to come.

  • Jewelry – A delicate baby bracelet or petite cross necklace will add to the beauty of the baby's outfit and can be kept as a precious token of this special day.

  • Favors – These are perfect for showing appreciation to guests and providing them with a take-home gift. Many types of favors can be personalized .

Think Twice Before Buying a Booster Seat

As a loving and caring parent, how you wished you'd spend all of your time with your son and daughters, you love to always play with them, spend time with them, bond with them, and always keep them company. Because of this, you take your kids with you places instead of leaving them home alone.

However, in the outside world, you'll never know what may happen, and if you bring your child with you all the time, you'd most likely put them in danger rather than keeping them safe at home. I know you like to spend lots of time with your children and you also want them to be very safe no matter where they are--whether playing or in the car.

Several studies have reported that as numbers of cars and car owners are continuously increasing each day, one of the primary causes of children's accidents and deaths are due to a car crash. This is so because when a car accident occur, a child whom is the more vulnerable than adults, would most likely obtain the largest impact, and as dependent as they can be, they cannot help themselves to survive. Hence, putting an end to the life of an innocent little angel.

Accidents – they happen even when you least expect them. Well, that's why they are called accident, they are unexpected and undesirable events. Obviously, no one wants them, except when the term is used for “accidentally bumping into your crush.” Kidding aside, accidents are often unwanted, yet they come though they were never welcome. You won't know when they would happen to you, so it is recommended that you'll always be prepared and alert.

Preparedness doesn't mean you'd just sit there, wait and accept this unwanted event. Preparing means fighting against accidents, being always ready to counterattack them, or if not, even as simple as avoiding them, or being one of the fortunate survivors.

Because children are still largely dependent on adults, they can't do these preparations all by themselves. Thus, as a parent, this is one of your tasks. You don't want to bump into an accident, and regret in the end that you have failed to prepare the security of your children.

Booster seat is one type of a child car seat, and it is widely known in the market, and most of the parents use them to protect their children from probable danger. They trust their children's life on this piece of equipment. Not until an emotional video was uploaded on You Tube by a mother of a 3-year old kid named Kyle. In this video, she blamed the death of his young child to the malfunction of her child's booster seat.

During the car accident they had on May 2005, Kyle was seated in a booster seat, which she thought would protect her child in such cases. However, it had functioned otherwise. The seatbelt was buckled but upon impact it unlatched.

Because of that accident, she urged all parents who are still using booster seats to protect their kids to buy a 5-point harness instead. A 5-point harness provides more security and protection to your lovable kids. A Britax car seat or a Maxi-Cosi car seat are very positive choices for a parent who wants to keep their child safe...very safe!

Features of a Great Child Safety Seat

Every parent's ultimate concern is baby safety. One of the key elements in that plan is selecting the right safety seat for the car. Keep these tips in mind when looking for the ideal design.

The first considerations are age and weight. Infants under age one should be provided with a safety seat specifically tailored to their size. It should also be rear facing and not intended for use by older babies.

Those older than one but less than four will weigh on average between 20-40 lbs. Of course, they're also taller than small babies, and they keep increasing in height as they get older. This introduces the possibility for a car seat that faces forward, making things more convenient for the parents. However, it still needs to be placed in the back seat.

The good news is that you don't have to give up convenience to achieve these goals. Some styles can be converted. This means that they can be switched from facing backward to facing forward with just a few moves. But don't forget about the specifications concerning weight and age.

It's essential that the car seat you use meets some minimum standards. It's important to look for a seat with a five point harness feature. This allows parents to use the car's safety restraining belt to attach the car seat at the hips, shoulders and between the legs. This gives a more secure and stable base.

An overhead shield is also a useful option. These padded covers circle down and around the infant. AT-shield is another option; this is a padded attachment for the should straps, in the shape of a T of course.

Look for models with a tether at the top that can be attached from the top of the child's car seat to an anchor point in the car. This provides additional safety. Some have a system called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children). Therefore, there's no need to use the safety belts in the car which are really intended for adults and older children. The car seat attaches, instead, entirely to the anchors.

A baby car safety seat that makes it easy to safely and securely add or remove padding, blankets and more provides additional comfort and safety. At the same time, parents have to spend less time adjusting the seat to make a good fit. That's a situation in which no-one loses. There are even those with an integrated travel vest to buckle around your child.

The twin concerns of convenience and safety are once again addressed by models that simplify the process of inserting and adjusting the restraining belts. Parents are busy people and it's all too easy to take an occasional shortcut. But no one wants to sacrifice safety. A design that requires only a few seconds to install or move the seat satisfies all those needs.

Doll Carriages - Fascinating Objects to Play with or Display

Doll carriages are a dollhouse accessory. These are carriages for dolls that can be pushed around quite like a baby carriage or perambulator. These are good things for children to play with. They can move around their dolls on the carriages. Sometimes, the doll carriage can even be big enough to carry a child on it. So, children can playfully carry each other on these carriages quite like dolls.

Doll carriage types

The doll carriages can come in a variety of styles and designs and can make use of different materials. There are the popular wooden doll carriages which resemble pushcarts and are strong enough to carry children too. So, children can push around each other on the doll carriage just like they do with the dolls. There are many providers of doll carriages who make the carriages extra wide to ensure stability. Children can turn the wooden doll carriage into a multi use vehicle using their imagination too. So, the doll carriage can become a tractor, a stroller and a lawn mower also during play. Thus, the single toy, the doll carriage, can take over the roles of several toys.

Some doll carriages are there that make pleasant sounds when moved around. These are much in demand. There may be plastic or wooden horses attached to the doll carriages to give a real carriage feel. Floral prints may also be used for decorating the carriage beautifully. Special doll carriages that resemble Cinderella’s carriage can be obtained to accompany dolls representing characters of the Cinderella tale. There are also on offer a variety of doll carriage accessories like the doll carriage cushions, curtains etc. which seek to spruce up the doll carriages and make them look all the more true to the fairy tales.

Resistance to tipping- important doll carriage safety feature

Just like in case of baby carriages it is important for doll carriages to also be resistant to tipping. A durable construction of the doll carriage is important too in order to ascertain that it can withstand years of intense and varied play and can resist the strains of both indoor and outdoor usage.

It can be said that the beautiful dollhouses- castles, palaces etc. seem quite incomplete without the elegant doll carriages accompanying them. So, dollhouse owners need to try and secure suitable doll carriages from the wide variety of designer doll carriages on offer. These will not only make the dollhouses look complete in all respects but also provide an item of great fascination for children to play with.

Make The Celebration Really Special With A Personalized Baby Shower Gift

There are a lot of beautiful and effective methods of personalizing a baby shower gift and the results can change a gift into something very special.

A gift could be personalized by adding a sticker on the underside, embossing the side or adding stitching to it across the top. It can display the name of the baby, the parents' names, the grandparents' names or the name of the giver.

The baby shower gift may even be decorated with a meaningful logo, photo or phrase. The text used to personalize the gift might be selected by the giver or added by the gift's designer. A logo could be drawn by a professional artist or by the individual who buys the gift. A photo might be chosen from a wide range of professional stock images or suppliedand incorporated into the gift.

Personalization transforms an impersonal gift into a keepsake that is going to be kept and treasured forever. It gives a reminder of happy events and imparts an incentive to hand the gift down from one generation to the next. Monogramming can add names to items made of cloth and printing can personalize any item which will absorb ink.

For instance, a slumber bear makes for a wonderful present. Babies adore the soft, teddy bear design while parents feel safe knowing the gift is strong and manufactured out of good materials. In later years both parents and the then baby can look back on the baby shower at which the gift was given and personalization will make the memories all the sweeter.

Another wonderful gift is a Dilly the Duck cashmere booster pillow which affords the perfect opportunity to stitch on the name of the baby. In the years to come this gift will change from a loved nursery item to a reminder of those tender years. Years after it has been received both parties can remember back to the many happy times spent reading a storybook while the youngster's head nestled into it.

Those storybooks can themselves be personalized in the shape of a Fairy Tale book that carries all sorts of of individual markings. For stories that are written by the child's parents, the storybook can be signed with the author's name. When the book is purchased then the gift giver can sign and date the book and perhaps print the name of the recipient. These methods and more turn a simple storybook into a treasured reminder of childhood.

Another baby shower gift which offers the opportunity for personalization is a birth plate on which to paint the baby's name around the rim or on the bottom. The best choice is possibly to print the baby's name, birth date and weight along the rim to commemorate the birth of that very special individual who entered your life on that day.

These are of course only a few of the many ways to create personalized baby shower gifts.

How to Travel Easily with a New Baby

The best word to describe a travel with your new infant is challenge. It is very challenging to have a long trip when you are with your children especially when air travel is involved. Parents are able to relax and enjoy traveling easier when they know their baby is safe and comfortable. With this, it is best to educate yourself of what to do when you will travel and you need to bring your infant with you.

One of the most popular and most common ways to make your travel secure for your baby is through purchasing a child’s fare where airlines will provide a baby car seat for infants to secure them during taking off and landing. However, this would cost you extra money out of your pockets. Aside from this, not all airlines allow parents to use a car seat.

Another option to look at is by purchasing an infant travel system, like a good name brand stroller such as a McLaren Bugaboo stoller. However, prior to purchasing this, it is best to do some research first with regard to the products being offered. This includes brands and models available, features like reclining seat positions, folding mechanism, weight restrictions and storage space in the strollers.

Once on the gate, it is also very important to ask the gate agent for a gate check ticket. With this, strollers can be setup in such a way that it will be readily available once you exit the plane after the flight. You'll find this to be a great help when you travel, especially if you have several flights to catch.

Carry on bags and diaper bags should also be in place when traveling with your baby. One great thing to do is to combine things into one easy to carry solution--for instance use a backpack as a pruse, diaper bags, and briefcase.

On the airplane, you must install the car seat on the plane when you purchase a ticket for your baby. For convenience, it is best advice that you seek help from the flight attendant and read the manual to make sure that your baby’s car seat is approved for air travel.

A baby sling can be a possible option too. This can help you carry your baby easier and trouble-free. However, some airlines do not recommend or allow special flight vest so it is best to do a research first or ask your airline before deciding to buy and carry a baby sling.

While you may be busy getting all the big gear for the trip together, don't forget the all-important engaging baby toys. Such toys include books, puppets, teething items and toys that make soft noises. This is very important in entertaining your babies so you would have no worries that your baby would cry out of great boredom.

The best practice to take is to always be prepared whenever you plan to do an air travel and list down all important things to consider prior to the flight. Through this, you can enjoy the travel with fewer worries for your infant security and comfort. Also, you can rest assure a peace of mind while traveling.

Wireless Video Baby Monitors

best baby monitors

A baby monitor is essentially a radio transmitter on a fixed frequency that puts out a nice FM signal so long as it is on. Most baby monitors transmit on a fixed frequency of 49.300, 49.830, 49.845, 49.860, 49.875, or 49.890 MHz (some have an A/B switch that lets you pick one of two of these). If the monitor is in an upstairs bedroom, in a house not covered with aluminum siding, even the simplest radio scanner can easily hear all sounds from that room. The receiver in a radio scanner is typically quite a bit more sensitive than the receiver portion of your baby monitor, and the scanner can pick up the transmission from perhaps half a mile away.

Baby Monitors have many varied uses that the name doesnt highlight. Some Baby Monitors is also useful for home security. You can use the Baby Monitor to monitor doors and windows throughout the house. Another often overlooked use of baby monitors are for the care of the elderly. Sometimes, elderly family members can be very difficult to care for, but the Home Sentinel Baby Monitor can make the task a little bit easier.

The two-piece monitor sets resemble walkie-talkies. The monitors have pale gray and royal blue plastic casing. A red "on" light and a blue "Gerry" label appear on the front of each monitor. The back of the monitors are embossed with "GERRY DELUXE BABY MONITOR MODEL 602" and the manufacturer's date code. The date code appears as a circle of numbers, with an arrow pointing to the number of the month and the two-digit year number on either side of the arrow. This recall involves monitors with date codes "8806" (June 1988) through "9005" (May 1990).

Walking into a room while a child is sleeping could potentially wake him or her. Baby monitors with digital video allow parents to watch over their children without being in the room, ensuring they wont wake their child.

Newer digital baby monitors have come out to address the problems of static and eavesdropping by using digital spread spectrum (DSS) technology. This technology scrambles signals traveling from monitor to receiver so that signals can't be intercepted by any outside devices.

There are many types of baby monitors available. Some of the best baby monitors offer wireless designs with color lcd's for easier viewing. Prices of some of the best wireless baby monitors are dropping and many good deals are to be had.

Baby Care Tip: Every Mother Can Do With One

If you are a mother that has recently given birth to a baby, you may find it to be quite strange taking care of the baby as it will be a totally new experience for you. Some mothers are also not very keen on doing the babysitting and may otherwise also be clueless about what it takes to properly care for their babies. It would pay for such mothers (and more experienced mothers as well) to make use of a baby care tips to help them learn about how to care for their newborn babies.

Bathing Frequency

The first baby care tip that every mother will need to follow is learning about how to bathe their babies. Normally, you will be advised that your baby only needs to be bathed twice or even thrice in a week, or whenever he or she becomes dirty enough to warrant giving them a bath. Other than that, there is also a need to give the baby sponge baths following a change of diapers and also after the baby has eaten a meal.

The second important baby care tip that you will need to follow has to do with how the baby should be cared for when he or she is being given a bath. It is absolutely not advisable to leave the baby on his or her own for even a single second while he is in the bathroom. Mothers and parents and baby caregivers must always be within arms length of the baby while he is in the bath.

A third baby care tip that you will have to follow is learning how to prevent your baby from suffering from diaper rash and from suffering from skin irritation. The simplest solution in this regard is to ensure that you change the baby’s diapers either prior to or after feeding him and also soon after he has relieved him. There is nothing quite as bad as letting a baby sit in dirty diapers because that is a sure way of causing him to suffer from skin irritation.

The fourth baby care tip that mothers and parents need to learn about is learning to buy diapers for the babies. It is recommended that the diapers should fit him or her without being too tight or too loose. Too tightly fitting diapers are sure to cause irritation to the skin, especially near the thighs and also around the stomach.

Besides following these and other baby care tips, as a mother and parent you also need to do your best to bond well with your newborn baby. There are also many other useful baby care tips worth learning about, and if you are interested in knowing how to address different aspects of proper baby care, you must then make it a point to read books and magazines as well as go online and search for more information in this regard.

Potty Training for Girls and Boys

Author: josh wright

Potty train your kid needs affection or care, the gender of your kid does not matter at all. But since girls and boys have different likings and preferences, so the inclusion of their respective preferences makes the job easier for the potty trainer. You need to add some masculine and feminine touch in aids accordingly for potty training your kid. Let us discuss potty training of boys and girls separately.

Potty Train Your Girl

When to Start

In most homes moms are the potty trainer and they know about all the requirements and likings of the girl needed to be potty trained. Mother knows the feminine nature of the girl and accordingly she trains her child. When your girl child is prepared to be potty trained then she shows signs like she inquires about the toilet schedule, she feels irritated in wet and dirty diapers, she start wearing her panties and cloth herself and she shows interest to know about her body functions.
Girls are mostly shy in nature that is why they learnt the toilet etiquettes early.

Dress Up Your Baby Girl for Potty Training

Girls wear easy clothing like skirts and frocks that are easy to manage. Moms just need to teach them to lift their dress up and pull their diaper down. It is wise to dress up your baby girl in accordance with the season and teach them potty training accordingly. It is best to start potty train your girl in summer season as there is no need to load them with heavy troublesome cloths. Put on your baby girl with T - shirt and pull up for potty training.
Select the Things According To Her Preference

Always consider her feminine side in choosing her cloths and other items. Girls love flowers and pinky shades buy them cloths, and other potty aids of her favorite shade and I can bet they try to avoid potty accidents in their favorite inner garments and cloths. Girls love dolls there are potty training dolls in the market, you can use them to teach your daughter potty using techniques.

Proper Guidance

Your daughter wants true guidance and teaching during the learning process. Introduce her to the toilet and teach her the ways of using it. Install her favorite potty chair in the toilet. Shower lots of praises on her whenever she acts as per your guidance and even if she makes an effort to do so. Girls are sensitive so never ever train them forcibly when they are sick or going on with social traumas etc. Give rewards that the girl loves to have like dolls and sometimes chocolates or ice cream treats etc.

What to Consider When Training Your Baby Girl?

Always teach your baby girl to wipe her properly to avoid any bacterial contact with soft vaginal skin and to save her from any infection. Problems that you may need to avoid in toilet training of girls are bladder infections. Always call your doctor if your kid suffers from any infection, painful or rapid urination, abdominal ache, wetting after bladder control. Do not ignore these problems. Do not stop her if she is imitating her male friends or any male family member. Let her realize herself the best way to use the toilet on her own.

Potty Train Your Baby Boy

Consider Your Boy's Behavior

Boys are generally naughty by nature. So there is no use to teach them new things forcefully. Add some more fun in potty training your baby boy so that he takes more interest in learning new ways of toilet use. If you force him to use toilet before he is ready; he may become stubborn and this will not benefit you and your child in a long run. Think from your child's perspective and meanwhile encourage him to learn accordingly.

To add more fun and raise interest in toilet use, manufacturers advertise many items like circled floatable targets that are made up of paper. Let him set the target and hit them. This way he would realize that going to bathroom is full of fun and is also a good deed.

Other items that lures your baby boy for toilet use is cheerios.
These are none other than small inexpensive floating targets.
Let your child set the target on it. You can afford them to use on daily basis.

The father or the elder sibling of the kid can help in teaching him toilet use. Send him to toilet with his father or elder sibling. This will make him realize that all male members of the family uses toilet so he may want to use it. He may be encouraged to use the toilet as his elders. The signs that determine that he is ready for potty training are his changed behavior; he starts imitating, wants to stay dry and clean and is willing to wear big boy underwear etc.

It is better to begin the toilet training your boys with lots of exposure from his father and elders. His dad should encourage him to use the toilet and praise him a lot if he does so. Give him his favorite set of books to make the experience good. If he is able to recognize the feeling of going toilet, teach him to communicate this feeling to you. Lend him underwear having his favorite cartoon characters. If he wears his favorite cloths he will take extra care to avoid any kind of accidents. Also select the potty chairs of his favorite cartoons characters. Give rewards that your boy kid loves like play with him or take him for visit. .

What First - Sit or Stand?

This depends upon child's ability and preference. If your child is grown enough to stand and love walking or running then teach him to use the toilet in standing position when he wants to urinate. To raise interest use some coloring elements in toilet so that whenever your kid uses it the color will automatically appear. Baby boy will love to play with the colors. You can also use disposable animal target or paper target and let your child to set the target and hit it.

In case toilet is very high and your child cannot reach it, bring him a stool to stand along the toilet. You should also teach him to maintain cleanliness and hygienic condition. The foremost condition for while potty training your kid is to have consistency in potty training schedule.

If you adopt these criteria, then potty training will be an easy as well as interesting process for both boy and girl.

When to Start Teaching Your Child Personal Hygiene and Maintain Cleanliness

Author: josh wright

Every one loves cleanliness and safe hygienic condition but how to teach your small baby to stay clean and healthy is a bit different. In potty training you have to deal with dirty accidents and meanwhile you would want to maintain cleanliness.
So, good potty training must include clean and healthy directions for your child.

Assuring personal hygiene is a crucial side of potty training.
This is necessary to keep your child away from harmful germs and microorganisms that can lead to the birth of serious diseases.
The foremost thing in determining personal hygiene is that your child must learn to wash up his bottom as soon as he starts using the toilet. It is because soon they will begin to use the toilet independently. So, it is good to teach them such things at earliest and above all it is important to protect them from bacteria and germs. You need to teach your kid the right use of toilet papers and importance of using it. It is necessary to clarify every stage to your child so that he understands what is going on and why.

However, the prime factor of the potty training remains to prepare the child to use the potty. As soon as you introduce him to potty and he has overcome the toilet terrors, teach him to use the potty regularly and flush it properly.

Bathroom Rules Do not impose strict restrictions while potty training your kid. If you do so then the child will hesitate to go into toilet and use it. This may result in accidents. If your child commits an accident in the bathroom, do not panic and wash the floor and seat thoroughly. Involve your child in the process so that he understands the seriousness of the accident. Never ever scold him.

In the beginning of learning the way to wipe his bottom your kid will waste toilet paper as he will use it in excessive amount.
So, do not scold him. On the contrary praise him and make sure that he cleans his bottom appropriately or not. As soon as your child learns the way of cleaning tell him how to use paper without wasting. Teaching the best way need lots of patience and efforts as small child takes times to learn.

Your child just needs your guidance and love. You must motivate your child in every sphere and let him find out the best and clean way to handle the things on his own. Guide him to clean in right direction like through the legs against the sides.

In case he does not want to learn any thing, then do not force him to do so. Very soon realize the importance of personal hygiene when he would suffer from itchy bottom and unpleasant smell. Now it is the right time to inform him about the need of cleanliness and good hygiene condition. Ask him to clean his bottom thoroughly using clean toilet paper. You can also ask your child to use flushable wipes.

Follow these steps to teach him the whole process-

* To avoid wastage of toilet paper give the right amount of
paper to your child. * Guide him the way to reach his bottom. *
Advice your child to clean his bottom thoroughly through more
than one wipes. * Ask him to clean until he receives clean
toilet paper. * Tell him the need of holding paper cover in his
hand. * If he cannot do it on his own; help him.

If your child is older then he will easily learn the way compared to small toddlers.

Maintain Consistency

Maintain a routine and teach your child potty training process in stages. The last stage must include flush or cleaning up of the toilet area and washing the hands. Ask your child to wash off his hands with a good soap. Explain him the importance of cleaning, flushing, washing hands and consequences of not doing the right way. Ask him to follow good and clean hygienic habits and encourage them to do it regularly. Praise him for executing good habits.

To motivate the child for washing hands ask your child to form bubbles from soap after toilet use. For that purpose prepare a song and ask him to sing at the of hand wash only. Make the Whole Process Easy To generate the kid's interest in the whole process of potty training, do what ever your child like and make the whole process easy for him. Bring him cloths that are manageable and thus avoid accidents to a extent. Buy items like potty chair considering the kid's preference. Buy cloth and potty items in his favorite color or cartoon characters. If kid likes his belongings then he will take extra care to avoid accidents.

* Give separate towel to him and never ever offer him guest
towel. * For extra care offer a stool to help him in climbing
and getting down from the high toilet. * Bring easy to use
supplies for your kid. For fast wash install sanitizing wipes in
toilet. * Offer easy-to-use fun-scented soap.

Naughty Kids

Developing and teaching cleaning habits to your naughty kid requires lots of patience and time. Small boys especially do not take much interest in maintaining cleanliness. They do not easily cooperate in washing hands, flushing or cleaning the bathroom. For that purpose you need to explain them carefully the need and benefits of maintaining the nice sanitation condition. Do not encourage bad habits and praise them when they use the toilet cleanly. They soon realize the significance and execute the things clearly as every one likes to use clean things and toilet is no different.

Story Telling - 3 Types of Stories To Tell

Children love listening to stories.

One easy way to begin your story telling career is to use a picture book. I find that holding it against my chest/stomach and reading it upside down works well. If you cannot read upside down, then hold it off to one side so you can glance over at it that way. A key is to read the story ahead of time so you do not have to read the story word-by-word. Younger children will not even know that you are not saying the exact words.

What type of story should you read?

I present here 3 classic story telling types.

  • fairy tale

  • nature story

  • historical story

Let's look at each type.

The Fairy Tale

"Once upon a time ..."

So starts the best known type of story. At least in many Western Cultures. A fairy tale. Few of us can say that we were not told fairy tales. Little Red Riding Hood, Snow-White, The Emperor's New Clothes, Puss-in-Boots, and many more. Many of these have been made into modern animated movies, and in some cases, regular live actor movies. A favourite is The Princess Bride. Or how about Ever After starring Drew Barrymore.

Although most children just hear the simple story, the underlying moral truths or general life experience lessons seep into their subconscious, to emerge later in life.

The Nature Story

Bringing animals, and even plants, to life is another common story type. Was your first thought Bambi? This famous Walt Disney movie is about a young deer as he grows and matures. E.B. White's beloved children's book "Charlotte's Web" is about a spider and a number of farm animals. It was also made into a movie.

The nature story type can be used to introduce actual facts about nature, and about the interaction amongst nature's various creatures and plants, etc. As well, and especially for city children, this story type introduces them to life forms that they rarely get to see. A fitting extension to this is a trip to a zoo, or even a real farm or large forested area.

The Historical Story

Compared to the nature story, which tends to discuss the present, the historical story helps us to give our children a sense of their past, and their ancestors. As a child's mind matures and enables them to understand the concepts of parents, grandparents, and beyond, a historical story enables us to share a connection of generation with generation. I think of "Little House on the Prairies" as one example here in North America. A historical story also helps build a sense of patriotism and national pride.

Historical stories also give our children stories of true heroes, as opposed to the modern sports hero, and similar. Quality historical stories often help instill desire of emulating goodness and wisdom.

Time to Act

If you do not already do so, start now to introduce your child to stories. Pick one from the above genres and read some of it each evening, just before bed. Your child will become enthralled and will look forward to this new nightly ritual. In many cases it will turn them into readers as they grow, and maybe even decrease their dependence on electronics!

Three Baby Shower Gifts They Won't Expect

Three Baby Shower Gifts They Won't Expect

Author: Alyice Edrich

I love baby showers. I love the idea of helping an expectant mother prepare for the arrival of her unborn child. I love sitting with a bunch of women as they trade mommy stories, play silly games, and eat yummy food. But what I don't like is watching one gift after another open only to discover it's the same theme: diapers, baby bottles, baby clothes. I've always prided myself on discovering unique gifts that both mommy and baby can use--maybe not the minute baby is born but eventually, when all the other gifts have long been forgotten. And these three items are sure to add a new twist to the words, "baby shower gift"...

OnTray By Laura Hamrick http://ontray2go.com

Whether you're an advent coupon clipper, a frugal shopper with a calculator and buying list, or a mom with young children, you'll want to get an OnTray™.

This little tray is amazingly simple to use and yet, it saves so many headaches. Simply attach the clip to the shopping cart handlebar and your hands free. No more bending over to pick up dropped baggies of snacks, no more bending over to pick up calculators that have slipped through the cracks on the seat, and no more little one's whining because they're bored or hungry.

The tray can be used to hold snacks, coupons, crayons and a pad, action figures, and so much more. And the best part is that it isn't bulky. It doesn't take up a lot of room so your child can still sit comfortably in the shopping cart. In fact, you can put two OnTrays side by side--one for you and one for your child--and still have plenty of room.

So the next time you're doing a little grocery shopping, think about how much easier it would be to have a little tray, then go home and hop online to order an OnTray™ for yourself--heck, you may even want to get a couple for gifts. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Snak Trap By Christine Moss http://snacktrap.com

I have to admit that when I first saw The Snack Trap™ I didn't think it would work. After all, the lid seemed flimsy and the hole looked as though the food would just force its way out when dropped or tipped over. But I've dropped it, turned it upside down, and shoved my large adult hand in and out of the lid...and guess what happened? I pleasantly found the lid works! This is an amazing product and my only regret is that it wasn't invented sooner!

Every parent's worst nightmare is finding his/her child has stashed an entire year's worth of finger foods under his/her car seat or having to follow that child around the house picking up the trail he/she has left behind.

While The Snack Trap™ was originally invented for toddlers, I have to admit that I find it the perfect solution for snacking at my desk! How many times have we, as adults, brought a cup of small snacks to the desk only to knock them over while looking for an item or reaching for that cup?

The next time you're out shopping for the perfect baby shower gift, Christmas stocking stuffer, or just because gift, for a toddler in your life, buy The Snack Trap™.

10 Minute Menu By Kathleen Peters http://10minutemenu.com

Are you tired of wasting your hard-earned money on restaurant and fast-food bills? Do you find grocery shopping to be your least favorite chore? With 10 Minute Menu, you'll not only find grocery shopping more desirable, but you'll learn to cut your grocery bill in half, save hundreds of dollars by eating in, and waste less food.

When I first opened the 10 Minute Menu Planner, I have to admit that I was overwhelmed. With my busy lifestyle, the idea of putting together a meal plan just didn't appeal to me. After all, who had time to scour recipe books, make the initial shopping list, and set up the menu planner? So I put off the review.

Then after countless trips to the refrigerator where I'd literally open and close the refrigerator in exasperation, I decided to give the 10 Minute Menu a try.

Each planner comes with everything you need to plan meals for an entire month, but what makes the system unique is that you aren't eating meals you've never tried. You're picking your family's favorites and incorporating them into a plan that works for your busy lifestyle. Then once everything is in place, it literally takes seconds to prepare evening meals. Which means...

You guessed it! Busy parents have more time to spend with their kids!

One thing I did different with the system was type and print out my recipes, using a 9 point font. I then cut and glued the recipes to the cards provided in the kit; that way, I didn't have to flip through recipe books and magazines, thus saving me even more time!

Baby Sign Language : Why it's important to teach them sign.

I totally agree with this article below. When my son was around three months old I started showing him the sign for "milk" every time he was given a bottle. He is almost 14 months old now but around six months he started making the sign back to me so I knew exactly what he wanted and when he wanted it. I also did the sign for "eat" every time I gave him baby food or put him in his high chair.
A Great Ebook Sign Language for Babies and Beyond

Author: John
Teach Your Baby Sign Language

One of the trendiest baby communication techniques being talked about lately is sign language. The main reason for its popularity is the fact that it allows you to communicate with your baby before a spoken language is learned.

With baby sign language your baby is able to tell others exactly what they want and need. Because of this, the number of baby tantrums can be greatly reduced.

Every parent has witnessed the familiar signs of frustration in their baby before baby communication skills are developed and baby is unable to let others know what they are feeling and what they may need.

Gestures are certainly within the range of a baby's repertoire long before the ability to articulate words is developed. Now, no one is suggesting that you sit down and attempt to teach your baby using the American Sign Language system. You just need a fairly small range of gestures that mean "I want", "please help", "I'm hungry" etc. If these gestures are understood by both baby and parent, they will serve the purpose of improving communication.

You should start teaching your baby sign language or, more accurately, basic gestures, by example. Because these gestures are visual in nature they are much easier for your baby to learn than spoken words.

You need to get to the stage where your baby begins to connect a basic gesture with an action, activity or object. If you do this consistently, you will find that over time your baby starts to mimic these gestures. You can also accompany the gesture with the word so that, eventually, your baby will graduate to using the spoken form.

Babies learn by imitating what they see adults do, so if you are consistent with using some basic gestures for certain activities and objects, you'll be surprised at how quickly your baby picks them up. The most important thing is to keep it fun. Turn the activity of learning sign language into a game and you will see the best results.

Plan to develop a positive and informative method of baby sign language early. This communication with your baby will be a great platform for communication and assist in their growing experience.

Remember, good communication between you and your offspring will be the basis from which they will develop the most important life skill of all...being able to communicate with others as they make their way in the world.

You will also tend to find that the better the communication channels you have with your child, the better behaved they will be.

Double Strollers Perfect For Siblings, Twins

baby travel gear

For families that have twins, or a newborn and another child still in diapers, double strollers can be a huge convenience and real benefit, and can make outings so much easier. With a double stroller the parents can manage taking the kids where they need to go in safety and comfort, without trying to figure out how to steer two different strollers or deal with folding them up and stowing them into their vehicle.

Double strollers are available in wide variety of colors and styles and are offered from a variety of different baby travel gear manufacturers. The first thing you will find is that there are two distinctly different types of double stroller models or configurations that parents can choose from, and each of these configurations come in an array of styles.

A tandem stroller model has two seats that are configured with one positioned in front of the other one. A double stroller has the two seats set up alongside one another. There are a number of advantages to each of these double strollers, as well as disadvantages that should be considered before settling on one or the other.

The most common model and most widely available, is the side-by-side double stroller. For the best handling when steering this type of stroller, it is better to use this model with twins or with two children who are fairly close to the same weight. These baby strollers are easier to maneuver over curbs, small bumps and obstacles.

Obviously, the double, side-by-side strollers are wider than the tandem stroller models, but in recent years, primarily due to feedback from parents, manufacturers have worked hard at redesigning them to be as narrow as possible so that they can fit through doorways more easily. However, it should be noted that a side-by-side double stroller will always be more challenging, awkward, and difficult to steer and navigate through crowded areas and tight aisles.

Another benefit to the side-by-side configuration is that with the children seated alongside each other, they can better interact as they grow and they also enjoy the same view from their seats. As the kids get older, this is an important factor as it will reduce the fighting and bickering that might take place over who gets to sit in the front seat. The seats of most side-by-side models don't recline fully, and if this is the case with the model you are considering, it should be used with older children and not infants.

The tandem stroller models seem to be better suited for use with a baby and an older brother or sister. With most models of these double seated strollers, the seat in the rear is able to recline fully which is perfect for the newborn, while the older sibling has a nice view from the front seat and plenty of leg room as well.

One advantage of the tandem stroller model is that is it smaller when folded up than a side-by-side stroller is when folded. They are also considerably narrower as well, which makes them easier to fit through aisles and doorways. But, the downside is that the additional length of these tandem double strollers makes them harder to turn, especially in confined areas. When shopping for a double stroller, keep these things in mind to help you make the best selection for your situation.

Baby stroller accessories fit mostall standard size strollers, and there are also baby strolleraccessories for double and triple strollers as well.Starting at the back of the stroller, where the parents standand push the stroller, there is a parent's organizer, which isbasically either a tray that snaps on to where the handle is ora 'bucket' that has Velcro straps and it hangs from the curvedhandle. The 'bucket' has two cup holders and a secret pocket forvaluables and the middle is insulated for snacks or can just beused to carry keys and a cell phone. Also in the back of the stroller are several different types ofstroller accessories such as mesh bags and thin backpack stylebags for carrying extra clothing or diapers or toys that don'tfit in the cargo area below. These bags usually Velcro on orslip over the handle bars or curved bar for pushing thestroller, in addition to the bags, there are large plastic hooksthat snap on to the arched pushing handle that will be able tohold a diaper bag strap, purse strap, grocery bag or a coat andscarf. A Baby Blanket Can Make A Wonderful Baby Shower Gift

It is not always easy to come up with a great gift for a baby shower but a baby blanket can be just the answer to earning yourself the "most popular gift" award at the party. With a range of original and clever designs available you can't go wrong here with these unique baby shower gifts.

But, what could possibly be more ordinary than a baby blanket I hear you ask? Used for thousands of years to wrap a baby and provide much needed warmth, it's difficult to see someone coming up with a novel idea in this area. Well think again. Baby blankets have entered whole new heights of fun and creativity.

"Pigs in a Blanket" is just one example which combines both a clever design and a practical gift. This two-piece gift set will cause lots of "awws" and "oohs" when the guest of honor opens the beautifully decorated gift box which comprises an enchanting vintage container topped with an organza bow.

Inside the box she will discover a plush blanket that can be printed with a memorable phrase or even personalized. It is wrapped around a gorgeous teddy bear-style pig which will soon become the baby's favorite. Made in stain-resistant polyester and with a tough construction, it might very well even be handed down to the next generation.

This gift also comes with a child's story book rhyme which is designed in a similar style to complement the two other items. "This Little Piggy" which is printed on the back was never such fun and the five little piggies which are dancing on the front are in agreement.

Just as much fun is the JoJo Giraffe toy which comes with its own very special blanket inside a keepsake box. At 20 inches tall it will proudly occupy a spot in the corner until the baby can no longer resist playing with it... which at a guess will take about four seconds. With his legs wrapped around a multi-colored keepsake box done in similar style, JoJo is unquestionably a perfect gift.

The blanket that comes with the gift adds hugely to the delight which both mom and baby will get from this beautiful item. Very easily personalized with the addition of the baby's name, the sunny yellow fleece is both soothing and warm. In addition, at 30 inches by 40 inches, it is ample size for either a baby blanket or decorative bed cover.

But baby blankets which are standalone items can also make perfect gifts. The Maddie's Meadow is a wonderful example. Colorfully and brightly decorated with flowers and butterflies on a pink background, it's most inviting. The gift box also carries the same theme with bright green grass and fluffy pink clouds that will remind mom of the joys of spring. Personalization is easily accomplished as a result of the wide satin border surrounding the soft fleece.

What Kind of Double Stroller Do You Need?

Another child on the way or are you expecting twins? Then you definitely need a twin stroller!

Before you begin, you need to determine which stroller is best for your lifestyle. For example, it doesn't make sense to purchase the same twin stroller your friend loves if you're an avid jogger and her favorite hobby is shopping.

Discover the best double stroller for you by answering the eight following questions.

1. What activities do you need a double stroller for?

Do you do most of your shopping in malls? Do you like to jog or take long walks around the neighborhood in all types of weather? Are you a frequent traveler?

The activities you do most often will decide what type of twin stroller you should choose, whether it be a regular twin mall stroller, a lightweight (ex. umbrella) double stroller, a double jogging stroller or a double all-terrain stroller.

2. Which seating design would best suit your needs?

Double strollers come in two seating designs: tandem (one seat in front of the other) or side-by-side. Both designs have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's important for you to think carefully about what your lifestyle will be like with twins or two children of different ages (although this is not easy to do before actually living through it!).

3. What are the ages and temperaments of your children?

Your twin stroller needs will be slightly different if you're the parents of twins than if you have a baby and an older child. Some double strollers are true twin strollers, meaning they have features that are meant to accommodate two children of the same age, such as the ability to clip in two infant car seats. There are also double strollers that are designed so that a toddler can sit in the front seat where he can have a better view and more leg room while baby brother or sister sleeps comfortably in the fully reclining rear seat.

Many parents find that side-by-side double strollers help keep the peace between children because they prevent arguments about who gets to sit in the front seat. On the other hand, being side-by-side can also create other problems with the two children sitting in such close proximity.

4. How often are you going to use the double stroller?

If you're only planning on using a stroller for quick errands to the mall a couple times a week, you don't need to purchase a heavy-duty, high-end twin stroller with all the bells and whistles. However, if you like going for walks or runs on a daily basis, or if you go out with your kids often and for long periods of time, you should consider getting something that is comfortable and durable, since twin strollers take twice the abuse of single strollers.

5. Who will be using the stroller?

Keep in mind the height and stride of the person or persons who will be using the double stroller the most, as well as their physical strength. It's no fun pushing a stroller with a handle that is too low or too high for comfort and neither is folding and picking up one that is cumbersome. It's true that twin strollers are heavier and bulkier than single strollers due to their very nature, but there are models on the market that are easier to handle than others.

6. What features are you looking for?

Do you want a simple, no frills twin stroller, or something with lots of comfort, durability and storage space? This brings us back to the types of activities you do most often. It's very disappointing to purchase a stroller and then realize that its features don't meet your needs as well as they could have.

7. How much space do you have for transporting and storing it?

With a few exceptions, double strollers take up a lot of room. The size of your vehicle may be a big deciding factor when choosing a double model. Make sure it fits! Also, take into account where you will store the stroller at home.

8. What can you afford?

This is probably the most important question of all. Think carefully of your present and future stroller needs with your two children. What is the minimum you are willing to live with? Can you afford to pay for a higher quality twin stroller that will make your life easier in the long run, or are you willing to take your chances with a budget stroller that may break down before you're done using it? For twins, a double universal car seat carrier (stroller frame) is an inexpensive alternative to buying an actual stroller during the infant stage if you're yet not sure what you'll need later on.

Once you've determined what you really need, then you can begin researching the various brands and models that are on the market. Read as many double stroller reviews as possible. You will be able to quickly eliminate twin strollers that don't fit your criteria, making the whole process a lot easier and less time-consuming.

Tips When Picking Your Baby Strollers

jogger strollers

When people are expecting the arrival of their first child, one of the important items that they will need to shop for is the baby stroller. Baby strollers are one of those very basic and fundamental necessities that help parents when on shopping trips, errand running, and exercising, such as walking or jogging. A good stroller will make the experience easy, while at the same time assuring the safety of the baby.

In many cases, new or expecting parents find themselves completely overwhelmed by the many choices and decisions they need to make about outfitting the nursery and choosing the furniture, equipment, and accessories to properly prepare for a newborn. When it comes to choosing a stroller, there are hundreds of offerings in various baby stroller models and styles, all made by dozens of different manufacturers of baby various baby accessories and equipment.

Baby strollers are designed to safely accommodate a wide range of children, from newborn infants to toddlers. This means you will be using your baby stroller for several years, so you want to choose one that is durable, with features to make it fully adaptable to the needs of your child as he or she grows and develops.

One of the main considerations when looking at the selection of strollers is how large the stroller will be when it is folded up. In most cases, parents will fold up the stroller and put it in the car to go to their destination, then secure the child in their baby car seat for the journey, and then unfold the stroller to take the baby into store or the mall. You need to be aware of the folded size of the stroller and the amount of space that will be needed in your vehicle to stow it.

Because of the need to fold and unfold strollers almost constantly, another important consideration is the mechanism that is built-in for folding it up. There are some models that can be folded or unfolded with one hand and these are particularly convenient when you don't want to set the child down to deal with folding up the baby stroller.

For some people, a lightweight stroller is an important criterion. This is especially true if you will be traveling frequently by air, bus or train and need to take the stroller along on the trip. Umbrella strollers are one popular option because they are easy to fold and carry. However, they do not have much in the way of additional storage areas. If you need space on the stroller for a lot of baby travel accessories, then this type may not be the best choice.

There are a number of specialty baby strollers, such jogger strollers, which are built more sturdily and are designed for moms with an active lifestyle. There are also twin strollers that are perfect not only if you are expecting twins but for a family with two small children. Recently, manufacturers have also started designing strollers that have a baby car seat built right in so that the parent do not have to take the child out of the stroller and then buckle him or her up in the car seat.

Daycare Centers: Things to Look For

Finding a Daycare Center

Before you choose a daycare center for your child, check out several centers and do some extensive research and check their references. Daycare facilities range from wonderful to awful. You want to choose a center where you child can have fun, is safe and can develop as a person and develop a variety of skills.

Look for a daycare facility that provides activities such as dancing, storytelling and group singing sessions as well as providing creative projects. Daycare centers also provide an opportunity for children to socialize with other children.

Daycare Center Concerns

Typically at a daycare facility there is not enough staff for your child to receive the substantial amount of personal attention they would receive if they stayed at home with a babysitter. The risk of your child acquiring a cold or the flu or other communicable illnesses really increases. Some daycare facilities will not allow your child to stay at the facility if they notice your child is sick and you might have a difficult time finding a competent babysitter on short notice.

How to Select a Quality Daycare Center

For convenience it is recommended that you try to find a quality center that is near your home or work. You have to decide if you want to place your child in a daycare facility that offers a small group environment or a center that had a large group of children.

It is very important to check with friends, your pediatrician and people you work with in order to get referrals for quality centers. Ask the managers of the centers that you are considering if they are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children or if they are accredited by the National Association of Family Childcare.

Ask the facility manager for information pertaining to the experience of the teachers, the food items they serve for lunch, the ratio of children to teacher. Find out if they offer a variety of activities and if they are flexible enough to meet your needs such as being a little late once in a while to pick up your child.

When you visit the daycare center which you are considering for your child make sure it is clean. See if the children enjoy interacting with the staff, find out if it will be warm during the cold months and check to see if the kids at the facility are having a good time.

Check to see if they have furniture designed for safety for children and if the furniture is in good condition. It is advisable to visit the daycare centers when the parents will be there since this will provide you an opportunity to talk to them and find out if they are pleased with the center or are their kids primarily there due to the convenience of the location of the facility.

Take your child to the daycare center and see if he enjoys being with the staff as well as the children. Make sure the center has a license for operating a daycare facility from the city services department. Doing extensive research will improve the chances that you select a quality daycare center for your child.

Decorating for Christmas While On a Budget

Christmas trees

Are you one of the millions of people who loves to celebrate Christmas? When asked, the majority of individuals respond that Christmas is one of their favorite holidays, if not their favorite. If you love to celebrate Christmas, there is a good chance that you may be interested in decorating your Christmas decor. Unfortunately, as you likely already know, decorating your place can get quite expensive. However, if you want to decorate for Christmas, but you do not have an unlimited amount of money to do so, there are a number of ways that you can go about decorating for Christmas while on a budget.

Deciding ahead of time what you need to buy is the best way to save money when Christmas shopping.Usually, shoppers have a hard time with impulse purchases. Impulse buying is when shoppers purchase an item as soon as they see it, an item that they may not have intended on purchasing. If you are shopping for Christmas decorations and you are on a limited budget, you are advised to not give into your impulse buying urges. It is best to decide what you are going to buy ahead of time. If you are unsure exactly what you would like to buy, that is fine, but you may want to focus on which rooms that you want to decorate for Christmas and which rooms you do not. This will also make it easier for you eliminate unnecessary purchases.

Once you have decided which type of Christmas decorations that you would like to buy, you can then start shopping; however, it is important to remember your goal of saving money. Christmas decorations are nice, but you will not want to spend more money on decorations than you have. The less money you spend on Christmas decorations, the more money you will have to put towards a nice Christmas dinner or Christmas gifts. Also consider the store where shop and when you will be going there.

For budget Christmas shopping, a definite stop would be to a dollar store. While many individuals assume that the items sold within dollar stores are poor in quality, they aren’t always. In fact, around Christmastime, you could get some really nice Christmas decorations for a dollar or less. Depending on the dollar store you choose to shop at, you should be able to walk away with Christmas pictures, Christmas wall hangings for kids, Christmas tree decorations, Christmas lights, and even Christmas potholders for your kitchen. As previously mentioned, all of the items found inside a dollar store should be one dollar or less.

In addition to dollar stores, you may also want to check out your local discount stores. Discount tores, in most cases, are a cross between a convenient store and a department store. You may want to check out dollar stores as they carry a wide variety of Christmas products including decorations. While the prices at discount stores will vary, you should be able to find beautiful Christmas decorations for fewer than five dollars each. Of course, there will always be items that cost more than five dollars, but you may be surprised with the selection of low-cost Christmas decorations that can be found at your local discount store.

Although there is a good chance that you may prefer to have brand new Christmas ornaments, it might not always be possible. If you are looking for low-cost, but specialty Christmas decorations, you may want to try shopping on an online auction website. By carefully examining which items you choose to buy, you could walk away with Christmas decorations that are slightly used, but look new.

As previously mentioned, it is also important that you keep when you are shopping in mind. For the largest selection of Christmas decorations, you will want to shop early, but for the best prices, you may want to wait until it gets closer to Christmas. In the days leading up to Christmas, some retail stores offer discounts on their Christmas supplies, including decorations. In fact, right after Christmas many of these discounts reach up to seventy-five or ninety percent off. Although shopping right after Christmas won’t help you this year, but it may be able to help you decorate your home, at an affordable price, next year.

Take Care With Baby Medications

If you baby is sick and needs medication, it's critical that you only administer the exact dosage prescribed by the physician. Even though a grownup or an older child might do ok with a slight variation, you don't want to take this chance with a baby.

With a small baby, it's essential that you pay attention to the dosage, since even a minor variation in the dosage can have a considerable impact on the outcome. Even little changes in your baby's weight will have a big affect on the amount of medication your medical professional will prescribe.

Be certain to administer the medication using the measuring cup or spoon that usually accompanies it. If you didn't receive one along with your medication, be certain to buy one that provides precise measurements.

Don't measure out the medication in a kitchen teaspoon; these are not an accurate measurement and can range considerably in size. This can greatly increase the risk of administering more medication than is necessary or safe for your baby. Even worse, you might be administering a dosage that will cause more harm than good to your baby.

As well, don't make a decision by yourself regarding the proper medication dosage for your baby. You might be putting your baby's health at risk and not even know it. Be sure to check with your doctor if in doubt.

Many parents are turning to natural remedies for their children, but it's important to keep in mind that these can affect a baby quite differently. And the fact that they are natural doesn't make them 100% safe for your child. Some natural products can even be toxic to a small baby and can do a lot of harm.

The bad news is that there are many places selling these natural remedies that aren't able to provide knowledgeable advice. Too frequently, they can unwittingly cause harm to the person using the product. Don't neglect to check with your baby's doctor or a reliable health care provider if you're thinking about using natural remedies.

In the early stages of your baby's development it is best to rely on trusted medical practitioners. Sickness in a small baby can advance very quickly to a critical level. Don't take the chance of administering medications that might harm your baby's health.

What Can You Do To Determine The Sex of a Baby?

Many expectant parents or those looking to conceive are wondering if it's possible to determine the sex of your baby; for whatever reason they prefer one gender over another and want to conceive a boy or a girl. Their reasons for this are personal and should be respected of course, but what can parents do if they're trying to determine the sex of a baby before conception?

For one thing, never think that you're going to get a guarantee regarding the gender of a baby no matter what you do. Conception is a process that happens at a microscopic level and of course there are typically millions of sperm that are present during intercourse, so any one of those can reach an egg in order to fertilize it. The sperm itself is what will determine the sex of a baby; this has nothing to do with the mother, her age, the month of conception, the amount of potassium in the woman's system, and so on. Sperm contain one chromosome factor each; a Y chromosome will create a boy whereas an X chromosome will create a girl.

When you realize that the gender of the baby is determined simply by which sperm reaches the egg first, you realize how difficult it is to determine the sex of a baby before conception. Those sperm are so tiny that you just can't do anything to control which one reaches an egg first! They're not like pet dogs where you can call one back and send one ahead and the mother certainly has no knowledge of which one is faster than the others.

So how do parents determine the sex of a baby? The only real differences that seem to be present in the sperm is that the Y chromosome sperm travel faster but die quicker than the X chromosome sperm. To conceive a girl you may want to create an environment that is hostile to the sperm so that the weaker boy sperm can die away, and to conceive a boy you may want to have deeper penetration during sex so that the faster sperm can reach the egg quicker. Even then, to really determine the sex of your baby you should wait until you're actually pregnant and have an ultrasound from your doctor so that you know for sure, as many parents have been surprised by their baby's gender!

Credit Cards For Teens

There are times when parents forget the importance of teaching their teenagers how to manage their money. If they have bad spending habits of their own, the children are going to pick them up and are going to make the same mistakes. There are things that parents can do to teach teenagers to make the right choices, even if the they aren't the unsurpassed at money management. Some think credit cards for teens are a bad idea, but they can work great if you know how to do it and what you should use.

You apparently don’t want to get credit cards for teens that allow them to spend what they require with no limit, or to give them one that has a balance that can easily get out of control. This is not the way to teach them about money, and in fact, can teach them that money is easy and expendable. As a first step, a teen should have a job before you allow them to have any type of credit card. Secondly, they should know how to save money before they have a card too.

You don’t require to go through the traditional steps to get credit cards for teens. You don’t require the traditional type anyway. What you want to do is to find the prepaid types of credit cards. These only allow the teens to spend what they have put into the card. If they have their own job, and have put money aside, they can use that money on their cards. Or, they can put what they have left on their credit cards for teens after they have saved some of their check. The second option is usually the unsurpassed for teaching good money habits.

After you have done all of this, your work with credit cards for teens is not over. If you can, get a print out of what they have spent each month and go over it with them. If they are running out of money very fast, they do not have the control that they should be learning. Talk with them about what they got and why they got it. Over a period of a few months, using credit cards for teens should show them how to spend sensibly. They can then take these lessons on with them through life. The lessons don’t always stick, but in many cases, that is exactly what they'll do.

Planning the Perfect Baby Shower

There are two things women love...Babies and Parties. That is why baby showers are so much fun and everyone almost always attends. When you are pregnant you feel bloated, tired, sick and basically like a whale but when your baby shower rolls around you feel like the most beautiful woman on the face of the planet.

When you are the hostess of a baby shower planning it is not always fun because you want everything to be perfect for the friend or relative that you are throwing it for especially since you do not want to upset a hormonal woman.

There are lots of things to consider when planning the perfect baby shower. If you want a great reference guide for planning a baby shower visit the Free Printables Page or Baby Shower page on Onestopshopforkids.com

  1. The Location- Normally the best place to throw a baby shower is at the home of the expectant mother. That way the soon to be mom can show off the babies nursery to everyone that attends. Some mothers wait until the very last minute to put the nursery together so in that instance I would suggest having it at the home of one of the hostesses or at the home of a relative of the mother to be.
  2. The Hostesses- Planning a baby shower alone is something that only SuperWoman can do. Get with a couple of the best friends of the mother to be and see if everyone is willing to split up some of the duties (an of course the cost) to make it a smooth ride for all.
  3. The Budget- Make sure you discuss your budget with the guest of honor and the other hostesses. That way you know exactly what should spend and narrow down the most important items that you can spend a little more on.
  4. The Guest List- The guest list will vary upon the location. Some showers are only family, some people prefer couples showers and some prefer to invite everyone they know in hopes of getting lots of gifts for their little one.
  5. The Theme- The theme can be simple blue for a boy, pink for a girl or yellow if the sex is unknown. Some mothers prefer the decorations and theme of the shower to go along with the nursery motif. You can decorate with balloons, ribbons or decorate napkins for simple bursts of color.
  6. The Cake- There are many options when it comes to a baby shower cake. You have to decide on the flavor, the size, the theme or decoration and the price you are willing to pay. Sheet cakes are convenient but two or three-tiered cakes are memorable and adorable.
  7. The Food- Food varies upon the time of the shower. If early in the morning you might want breakfast/brunch type foods. A lunchtime shower might call for sandwiches, salads or finger foods. An evening shower may call for wine, heavy appetizers or small finger foods.
  8. The Invitations- Invitations can also be based upon theme as well. Check out the One Stop Shop For Kids invitation page for lots of great options
  9. The Gifts- Normally it is best to buy off the registry so the parents-to-be get exactly what they need but but bibs, burp cloths and blankets are always great gifts. I recommend that the hostesses get together and choose one of the big gifts on the Mothers registry such as car seat, stroller, high chair, pack-n-play and purchase it.

Traveling with an Infant...How to do it and what you might need

The Must Have Checklist for Traveling with an Infant

Traveling with a baby/infant can be overwhelming for the first time due to the amazing amount of stuff that such a little person needs each and every day. When we are in the comfort of our own homes we take for granted the amount of things we use to care for our children each day.

Here is a checklist that will hopefully make traveling with your baby easier, more efficient and enjoyable...oh and hopefully help you keep your sanity.

Toys- Always have a few of your babies favorite toys. You will need this distraction while trying to go through airport security or waiting in long lines. I recommend toys that can attach to the car seat or stroller...otherwise you might be playing the pick up and wash game over and over.

Blankets- Bring a couple of blankets especially if your child has a security blanket. You can use them to let the child rest or play on the floor, shade your baby or protect your clothing from spit up or unexpected diaper leaks.

Breast Pump - If you use a breast pump or if you are going to use one get one of the traveling kinds that is easy to transport. I loved my Medela Pump In Style Advanced - Metro Bag . It comes in a discreet black carrying case with everything you need.

Car Seat- Car seats are always important to take unless you plan on renting one from a rental car company. They make traveling on planes and cars safer. You can also get travel accessories and toys for your car seat to keep your child occupied.

Stroller- If you can get a small travel stroller (especially one that will collapse and looks like a large umbrella) it can easily be checked at gates or stored in overhead bins on airplanes. Baby Planet Max Traveler Stroller Black/Gray also J.L. Childress Co. Stroller Gate Check Bag .

Clothes- Always make sure to pack One to Two extra outfits in your diaper bag or carry on luggage in case your baby spits up or has a diaper leak. Also pack socks or booties. By the way it is always a good idea to pack and extra shirt or two for yourself in case you get spit up on...nothing worse than smelling like baby barf in tight airplanes.

Diapers- I always pack way more diapers than I will probably need whether I am traveling by road or by plane that way I am covered if there is a traffic jam or plane delay.

Lansinoh Diaper Rash Ointment - The last thing you want is for your child to have an uncomfortable diaper rash with no cream for relief so make sure to pack a tube.

Extra Bottles, Nipples or Sippy Cups- This way you have a back up if one is dirty and you don't have quick access to a restroom to wash the bottle, nipple or sippy cup.

Extra Pacifiers- Always a good idea to have at least three that way if one is lost and one is dirty you still have a "mute button"

First Aid Kit- It is a good idea to have something like me4kidz Medibag First Aid Kit so you can treat your child for minor injuries they may receive while traveling. Hopefully you will never need it.

Formula, water and/or juices- This is great to keep your child hydrated and it always helps a child's ears on an airplane if they have the distraction of eating and the sucking on the bottle will help the popping of their ears.

Portable/Inflatable Bath Tub- Safety 1st Kirby Inflatable Tub -Blow it up, fill it up, and splash away. This soft, inflatable tub is a great in-between for the baby who's outgrown the infant tub but isn't quite ready for the adult tub. Forgiving sides protect from accidental bumps, and the ample dimensions offer plenty of space to play. Not a neccessity but depending on your accomodations you might prefer it to bathing your child in a hotel tub.

Pack N Play- You can get a pack n play or phil&teds traveller Red . Imagine a full-size crib that weighs less than your baby. This incredibly portable crib/play yard travels like a dream and sets up quickly and easily with a cushioned, insulated, self-inflating mattress. It's a comfortable, secure place for your baby to sleep indoors, play outdoors.

Night light- If your child is afraid of the dark or sleeping in a different place this will help soothe them. It is also helpful to you when changing diapers in the middle of the night. KidCo Shock Shield Hi-Lo Night Light

Plastic Bags- You are supposed to take plastic bags with you when you walk your dogs well the same goes for children. Always have extra plastic bags on you to put dirty diapers, dirty clothes or dirty blankets in so the mess doesn't get mixed in with clean items in your diaper bag. Classy Kid Green & Clean Diaper Sacks (75-Pack)

Travel Silverware and baby food- You can't always get baby food at the local convenient store or airport store so pack a couple extra.

Chest Carrier or Sling- This will help you carry your child with ease and leave your hands free to carry other important items.

Lotions, disinfecting gels, baby shampoo, etc- Help your child fight off germs and stay clean by having small bottles of these items in a ziploc bag.
Tissues- To help stop the runny noses so your shirt sleeve doesn't have to.

Wipes- Wipes can be your best friend to clean up dirty diapers, messy hands, runny noses and even wipe down areas or items that your child has to touch.

If you are traveling by car and have the opportunity to have a dvd player I recommend bringing all of your childs favorite movies. If they aren't into movies yet that is fine too...the color, the movement and the noise can be great distractions. It might drive your husband crazy listening to cartoons over and over for long drives but I am sure he would prefer that to screaming, crying and whining.

Whatever you do try to stay relaxed and happy because if you are stressed then your child will be stressed and it will make things harder on you.

Planning a "First" Birthday Party for Your Baby

Everybody loves a party right??? Well a childs "First" Birthday Party is party that no one will forget...well except for maybe the One Year Old. Planning a party for a one year old can be stressful for first time parents because they want everything to be perfect for their baby. The child will no doubt not remember a single thing about their party but the parents, grandparents, aunt/uncles, cousins and friends will.

Here are some pointers and tools to help you pick the right theme for your child and your budget.

  • First decide on the date and location of the party. Most parents have the first birthday party at the home of the child but depending on the size of your guest list you may have to find an alternate location. Make sure the location you choose is practical in case of rain, snow or excessive heat.

  • Determine whether or not you want a character theme or the standard blue for boy and pink for girl theme. These links will help you narrow down themes for Boy's First Birthday and Girl's 1st Birthday.

  • Make sure you have plenty of help from friends or relatives for cleaning, setting up, hanging decorations, making cakes, etc.

  • Once you decide on a theme you must decide on the cake. Will you be having cupcakes, regular box cake, sheet cake or make a cake to match the party theme. Some sample cake pans:

The Must Have Checklist for Every First Time Parent

The Must Have Checklist for Every First Time Parent
I am a first time mom and I can remember being excited about all the things I needed/wanted for my newborn son yet totally terrified that I didn't have everything I needed to properly take care of him so I compiled this list of things to help other first time moms know what they should have and the reasons why. Everything you need can be found on One Stop Shop For Kids .

Bath Time!

Some children don't like bath time so it is the job of the parents to make it fun and yet safe at the same time. Here is a list of things that parents need to enjoy tubby time with their children.

Infant Tub- My son absolutely loved taking a bath in the Fisher-Price Rainforest Bath Tub . This three-stage tub provides a comfortable bath-time experience for your baby from birth through toddler hood. For newborns, hang the sling from both ends to cradle your infant safely and securely. When your baby begins to sit up, use the sling along the slope of the narrow end of the tub for reclined support. For toddlers, remove the sling completely, or use as gentle back support at the wide end of the tub.

Bath Time Gift Set- You will need lotion, shampoo, powder, body wash, safety swabs and of course a rubber duckie! Johnson's Bathtime Gift Set gives a new mom everything she needs all at once and makes a great shower gift!

Wash Cloths- Bumkins Organic Cotton Washcloths (3-Pack) Sage These premium-quality washcloths are especially thick, soft, and luxurious for bathing your baby's delicate skin. Use them in the kitchen after mealtime or in the tub at bathtime.

Bath Toys- Help your child learn while bathing. The Munchkin Sea & Learn Bath Shapes are colorful and intriguing twist on an old favorite, this 84-piece set of nontoxic foam letters, numbers, and sea shapes is guaranteed to keep your child happily occupied in the tub. The set includes two sets of letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9), plus 12 sea shapes, all decorated with vibrant patterns. Your child will love forming words, number sequences, or a tub wall masterpiece. Or, just let them float around. Packaged in a ventilated storage container that helps keep shapes mildew-free.

Container to hold bath toys- Boon Frog Pod Scoop, rinse, and store bath toys in one fell swoop with the innovative Frog Pod. The base adheres to virtually any bathtub wall and comes equipped with a built-in shelf for shampoo, conditioner, and soap. When it's time to clean up, use the removable scoop for easy pick up.

Water Thermometer- Protect your child from scalding water with this floating Safety 1st Bath Buddy Thermometer . Or, if your child loves water play, the constant temperature read will also let you know when the tub has grown too cold

Faucet Cover- Kel-Gar Tubbly-Bubbly Elephant Your baby will think it's so funny to see the bath water pouring out of his animal pal's mouth; little does he know, this cute faucet protector is serving an important safety function as well

Flexible edge shampoo rinse cup - To keep the water out of your childs eye use the S.C. Products Shampoo Rinse Cup . This easy-to-pour rinse cup helps keep shampoo and water out of your child's eyes during bath time. A soft, flexible edge along the front forms a watertight bond against the forehead.

Tubside Seat for parents- Safety 1st Tubside Bath Seat Straining to support your baby in the tub while trying to reach those hard-to-clean spots can be tough on your back. This well-designed contoured bath seat does the swiveling for you, offering easy access to your baby's front, back, and sides while you stay in one comfortable position. You can also lock the seat in a stationary position

Robe/Hoodies - Wrap your baby in warmth when bath time is done with this Carter's Lamb Hooded Towel . Cute and cozy, it's detailed with pink trim and an appliquéd and embroidered sheep peeking over the fold. Clothing! When you go to stores looking for clothes for your little one it can be overwhelming. Here is a list of necessities.

Footie Pajamas- Carter's I Love Hugs Terry Sleeper A gaggle of happy animal friends gather to invite hugs on our cozy white terry sleeper by Carter's. An appliquéd frog, duck, and giraffe peek over an embroidered fence, while a teddy bear playfully dangles over the front. These animals, with their "I love hugs" message, make the sleeper an adorable choice for baby girls or boys. The covered feet have bold giraffe appliqués, making it more fun for baby to kick. Neckline and cuffs are edged with 100percent cotton interlock trim. For easy changing and dressing, the sleeper snaps all the way down from the neckline to the covered feet.

Swaddle Blanket- Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece Infant Wrap Yellow The Swaddle Me Infant Wrap is a cozy microfleece wearable blanket that eliminates the hazards of loose bedding, while keeping your baby warm all night. In addition, it has been found that infants sleep better and longer when swaddled, or wrapped securely. The Swaddle Me Infant Wrap is easy to slip on and wrap around a sleeping or wide-awake baby. The bottom pouch pops down for easy diaper changes while your baby's arms are still wrapped, and the back has slits for car seat/swing harnesses so that a harness can be attached securely. Cute styling features two little bear cubs on the hook-and-loop closure panels.

Jackets with hood for cold weather- Zutano Cream Fleece Jacket Cream Zutano's stylish Sherpa fleece jacket manages to be warm without extra bulk, so your baby can move freely. This cozy button-front jacket can be worn three seasons of the year, either alone or as a layering item.

Mittens/gloves- Under the Nile Organic Mittens Natural Made from 100percent organic Egyptian cotton, these mittens are gentle on newborn skin -- and on the environment. The soft, cozy cotton jersey covers the fingers to help keep your baby warm and also prevents accidental scratches. The cotton is grown, dyed, and loomed without any chemicals. Pair them with matching Under the Nile booties, caps, and blankets for a thoughtful baby gift. Under the Nile is a fair-trade company and is proud to have organic certification

Onesies- Carter's Blue & Brown 5-Pack Bodysuits are perfect for your little athlete. Light blue with allover football print in darker blue is accented with appliqued and embroidered cleats, football, and helmet; chocolate bodysuit paired with light blue stripes; medium blue bodysuit is detailed with the words "Property of Mom Forever"; light blue bodysuit with allover sports equipment print featuring footballs, basketballs, baseballs with bats, and soccer balls; chocolate bodysuit accented with embroidered words "All star."

Sleeping Gowns/Bags- Carter's Blue Dog Sleeping Bag For ease, comfort, and warmth, sleeping bags are the best. With a simple bodysuit underneath, they make nighttime diaper changes really easy. You can even zip this sleep sack over pajamas for an extra layer of warmth on chillier nights

Socks- Trumpette Toddler Mary Jane Socks These playful Mary-Jane socks look like dressy little shoes. Packaged in a beautiful box with a brightly colored top and wrapped in polka-dotted cellophane, they make a very cute and thoughtful gift. Fun colors include avocado, fuchsia, purple, red, white, and golden yellow. Trumpette Baby Camo Socks Boy Socks this cute are too fun to hide! Stylish camouflage creates a colorful pattern on six pairs of comfy socks from Trumpette. Boy colors include khaki, green, blue, orange, yellow, and gray; girl colors include pastel yellow, tangerine, pink, lavender, sea foam, and lime. Non-skid soles give your baby's feet some traction. And, the camo-topped box and polka-dot cellophane create a great gift-ready package.

Summer Hats- i play White UPF Sunhat Made from sun-protective fabric with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 30+, this lightweight hat is crucial to protecting your child's delicate skin from the harsh, damaging rays of the sun. It features an elasticized back for a snug yet comfortable fit, a brim in front to shield the face, and a flap in back for neck protection. Available in Infant (6-18 months) and Toddler (2T-4T) sizes.

Sunglasses- Your child's eyes may be more sensitive than yours to bright light and equally vulnerable to the damaging rays of the sun. These comfortable, i play Palm Flexi Specs sunglasses stay put with an adjustable strap and provide 100percent UVA and UVB protection.

Winter Hats- Zutano Stripe Fleece Hat This warm and toasty cotton/polyester knit hat helps your baby retain precious body heat. It fits snugly and is topped by two sweet little ears. Paired with Zutano's matching fleece mittens and jacket, your child can't get any cuddlier

Food and Formula

Diaper Bags- Diapers Bags are personal and something that you have to carry with you every where that you go. Check out these awesome Diaper Bags and find the one that matches your needs and your style.

Bibs- Bibs are a necessity and an accessory. To find the cutest bibs for your little check out these links... Bibs for Boys and Bibs for Girls.

Bottles- There are many brands of bottles to choose from but the ones that work best among my friends and I are Dr. Brown Standard Polypropylene Bottle (3-Pack) and Philips / Avent Natural Feeding Bottle (3-Pack) . Dr. Browns bottles were designed by a doctor in response to his son's colic, this revolutionary bottle helps reduce colic, spit-up, and gas. Made of safe, polypropylene plastic that's BPA-free, a special internal vent prevents air bubbles from forming in liquids and keeps nipples from collapsing. The vent also helps prevent fluid from gathering in your baby's ears while feeding, reducing the chance of painful ear infections. Each bottle comes with a silicone nipple, nipple collar, nipple cover, travel disc, and two-piece snap-together vent. The Avent bottle has a patented anti-vacuum valve that prevents your baby from swallowing air, which can cause painful gas. The broad soft silicone nipple mimics the shape and feel of the breast. Dome caps seal the nipple for spill-proof mixing and transporting. Avent's wide-neck design is easy to hold and makes filling and cleaning a breeze. Features an accurate, easy-to-read scale to let you know how much you've fed your baby.

Bottle Brush - Philips / Avent Bottle Brush Scrub bottles, nipples, and feeding accessories with this plastic dishwasher-safe bottle brush. A curved design and round bristles make cleaning hard-to-reach areas a snap.

Bottle Sterlizer- Sterlizing bottles can be a major pain boiling water or taking up extra space in your dishwasher. I suggest you get a sterilizer like this Dr. Brown Microwave Steam Sterilizer . Sterilizing your Dr. Brown's Natural Flow baby bottles couldn't be easier. This microwave steam sterilizer features a custom tray that accommodates four standard or four wide-neck bottles plus all of their components. Fill the sterilizer with 6-oz. of water, position the bottles and components, cover with the lid, and then place in the microwave. The steam heat effectively kills all common household bacteria within 5-8 minutes (depending on your microwave's wattage)

Bottle Warmer - You can warm your baby's breast milk, formula, or baby food with no danger of overheating in this handy appliance. The unit holds all types of bottles, including disposables and baby food jars. Just plug the Philips / Avent Express Food and Bottle Warmer , add water and your bottle or jar, adjust the heat setting, and relax. A light flashes when the water reaches the desired temperature, telling you it's time to check your food. A chart on the back of the unit explains how long it takes to heat different-sized containers at different settings. The set includes a feeding dish and lid so you can warm up any kind of baby food, including leftovers from last night's dinner.

Breast Pump- Medela Pump In Style Advanced - Metro Bag This is the breast pump I used and I totally reccomend it. Updated for 2008 at an unbeatable price, the Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump has all the same great features as the original plus some new, thoughtful additions. Every component you need stows neatly inside the roomy messenger bag that's handsome enough to use after you stop pumping. Second, the pump motor is removable and comes with a sleek, compact carrying case so you can pump out of any bag you choose. Plus, you get a matching removable cooler and ice pack that chills milk for up to 12 hours. Also new: This model allows you to toggle between two pumping modes for a gentler transition, using a revolutionary technology that mimics your baby's nursing pattern: Let-down Mode simulates your baby's initial rapid suckling for faster milk flow; Expression Mode mimics your baby's slower, deeper suckling for maximum milk flow in less time. It also comes with an AC adapter and battery pack, so you have two ways to use your pump: using battery power or plugged into an electrical outlet.
Breast milk storage containers for freezing breast milk- Is your dish rack overflowing with baby bottles, breast pump bottles, sippy cups, and more? Streamline your system with this new set ... Medela Breastmilk Feeding & Storage Set . Pump breast milk into a bottle (now conveniently marked in easy-to-read ounces and milliliters), store it, or screw on a nipple -- any standard neck nipple will fit the neck's universal thread -- and feed directly to your baby. The nipple caps also double as feeding cups. It doesn't get handier than that.

Burp Cloths - Burp cloths are necessary but you want something cute and stylish on your shoulder to catch all the spit up so check out Baby JaR Burpies City Slicker (Set of 2) Click the following links for Boy Burp Cloths or Girl Burp Cloths.

Dishwasher Basket for nipples and bottles - Munchkin Deluxe Dishwasher Basket The key to this design is that it keeps nipples and straws in an upright position throughout your dishwasher's cleaning cycles, allowing for a targeted water spray and more thorough sanitizing.

Extra Bottle Nipples - Dr. Brown's Wide-Neck Nipple (3-Pack) The wide contoured shape of this soft silicone nipple closely mimics that of the breast, making the switch from breast to bottle easier for your baby. The nipples are designed for use with Dr. Brown's wide-neck baby bottles, which feature a special vent that helps prevent colic and excess gas and keeps fluid from gathering in your baby's ears.

Formula- Finding the right formula can be a guessing game. Your child may have a reaction to certain kinds. To find the perfect match for you and your baby click here to view all the formula options.

Nipple Pads if breastfeeding - Lansinoh Ultra Soft Nursing Pads (36-Pack) Nursing pads are a must for a nursing mom. Your nipples will leak milk at the most inopportune time so having a lansinoh nursing pad inside your bra is a must for your sanity and your clothes! For over 20 years, Lansinoh has provided relief and comfort to millions of mothers and their babies through their premium, mother-tested products. Lansinoh understands that in the first days of breastfeeding, nipples can become extremely tender. These pads, designed to relieve tender skin, gently cradle the breast for maximum comfort and absorbency.

Nursery

Every new mom wants their child to come home to an amazing nursery. There are so many things that can help you and your child adapt to the new surroundings and life that you are going to lead as mother and child. Here are some important and helpful items to assist you in your making the perfect nursery.

Diapers - There are lots of diaper brands to choose from. In my experience the Pampers brand works the best on boys and Huggies for girls. They also come in stages and sizes.

Crib- There are may selections on cribs. You can have a round, sleigh, co-sleeper, bassinet and more plus many colors such as white, black, honey, espresso, red, blue, etc.

Changing Tables- You will spend many hours changing diapers on your changing table so make sure it is functional and cute to go with your nurseries theme.

Glider/Rocking Chair - Rocking your child to sleep, reading a bed time story or just cuddling is one of the most precious things you can do with your child so make sure.

Pack N Play/Playards- These are great for traveling, using as the crib in your master bedroom when the baby is first born or you can put them in your kitchen so your child can safely play or rest while you make dinner.

Swings- Babies like motion so baby swings help the child relax and feel as if it is still swaying and moving in the womb. I highly recommend one...my son took lots of naps in his swing which made it easy for me to catch a few winks as well. Fisher-Price Rainforest Swing

Bouncy Seats- These are great because most come with a vibration mode that will help soothe your baby if it is upset. I also placed my son in his bouncy seat with his bottle while I showered so I could have a few moments of privacy and I knew he was safely strapped in.

Stroller- When you are a mom your arm muscles get toned quickly because you are constantly lifting heavy car seats and carrying your little one, diaper bag, purse etc. The stroller is a must to help you have your hands free while shopping, going to the zoo, etc. You have many options on strollers as well...regular strollers, travel strollers, jogging strollers, strollers that ride behind bicycles.

Exersaucers- These are great for helping your child learn to stand and strengthen their back. They come plain or with tons of gadgets and noise makers to keep your child entertained.

Walkers- Walkers help teach your children how to walk and be mobile but make sure all stairways are blocked so there are no accidents.

High Chairs- There are also many different types, colors and styles of high chairs. Travel High Chairs, Stackable High Chairs, Space Saver High Chairs, Modern High Chairs and regular High Chairs

Booster Seats- There are two kinds of booster seats. One for the kitchen table and one for your car but the one for your car won't be needed until your child is much bigger.

Everything a First Time Mom Needs to Know

TUMMY TALES: A Funny Loook at Pregnancy from the Eyes of a First Time Mom

First Trimester
One day you wake up feeling anything but fine

You take a test and your life is changed by a plus sign.

Sometimes it is a surprise, other time it is by plan
Either way in nine months you'll have a little woman or man.

In the first trimester you may be sick and sleepy
And sometimes for no reason, uncontrollably weepy.

In college you might have paid tribute to the porcelain king
During pregnancy it can become a gross and frequent thing.

Prenatal Meds are important but as big as a horse pill
Take them at night before bed to keep from getting ill.

Drink a lot of water before each and every check up

Because each visit begins with you peeing in a cup.

Because of your growing baby, Tylenol is about all you can take.

Being safe rather than sorry is the best choice you can make.

Pregnancy hormones may give you wild dreams at night

Some are fun, wacky, intense or scary and cause fright.

Sometimes not exercising due to pregnancy is a treat

And watching your husband do all the chores is really neat.

Second Trimester

In the first 20 weeks you may be full of worry

And hormones can change your mood in a hurry.

In the second trimester you may start to feel great

But suddenly you have gained a ton of weight!

Your whole body will change as you put on each pound

Your breast grow to be gigantic, firm and round.

When you gain weight your butt and hips may spread

It happens to all of us so don't cry and hide in bed.

Doctors say twenty to thirty-five pounds you should gain

So eat healthy and exercise, and it will fall off again.

Your baby will start kicking and quickly growing in your tummy

It will let you know when something tastes yucky or yummy.

You may place your hand on your tummy to feel each and every kick

The mere thought of something wrong will be enough to make you sick.

Once your baby starts kicking it will rarely be still

Nothing makes a baby move like orange juice will.

If sleeping on your tummy is your favorite way to rest

Get over it quickly because sleeping on your left side is best.

You go in for an ultrasound to check the hearts pace

Your own heart melts when you see your baby's face.

As your tummy expands there will be new clothes to buy

Pregnancy is amazing and beautiful so smile don't cry.

In the middle of the night you might crave pickles and ice cream

Begging your husband to get it for you might make him want to scream.

Once you learn the gender of your baby woman or man

You will have the nursery decor, names and baby showers to plan.

The wonderful compliments, well wishes and gifts you receive

Will be more thoughtful and amazing that you could ever believe.

Pamper yourself with a pedicure, manicure and a warm bath as a treat

But keep the water warm not hot or your baby will overheat.

Some people think sex is awkward and not as much fun

It will just be a little different because of carrying your little one.

Sometimes water will be the only thing you desire

It will be the one thing to help your heartburn fire.

Around 28 weeks you will take the glucose test

If given a choice on flavors, the orange tastes the best.

Third Trimester
As the third trimester progresses, your anxiety may heighten

Childbirth is almost here, but there is not reason to be frightened.

There are a few things to do in order to prepare for the big day

Wash blankets, clothes and get organized in every way.

One thing you will need a lot of in jammies
Make sure to have them at home and at each of the grammies.

Dads think that sleeping gowns on their sons don't look right

But they are great for changing diapers in the middle of the night.

When packing for the hospital there are a few things you might need

But you probably wont need everything you will read.

You might so tired and happy that you just don't care

But it's nice to have deodorant, shampoo and a brush for your hair.

You will want comfy clothes for you and your bundle of joy

A few blankets, a hat and socks for your little girl or boy.

Your new diaper bag may come in a colored pattern, cotton or tweed

Just make certain it has room for the million things you will need.

Diapers, wipes, clothes and "pacis" will fill your diaper bag

Orajel and teething tablets in your diaper bag will be a must keep

When your child starts teething neither of you will get much sleep.

Always have extra clothes for your baby and for you

It isn't pleasant smelling like spit up or baby poo.

Foods to avoid in pregnancy include sushi, alcohol and brie cheese

After labor you may want to say, "get me a big margarita please!"

Wearing super cute boots, sandals and heels can be a no-no

Because your center of balance will change as your uterus begins to grow.

You might out your dirty glass in your purse and your keys in the sink

Forgetfulness is common in pregnancy so don't worry about what others think.

During pregnancy you have lush hair and a maternal glow

This is one of the most amazing times your body will ever know.

While you are pregnant please don't smoke or drink

They can do more damage to your little one than you think.

When the doctor starts to check to see if you are dilated

Your big belly makes it uncomfortable and you may feel violated.

Don't worry if your dilation progress each week is slow

Your baby is just comfortable and is taking extra time to grow.

Don't worry much about your water breaking at the mall

It could be a gush of water, or a trickle of not much at all.

When your contractions start coming, wait until they are five minutes apart

You will know it is time when you feel it deep in your heart.

When you get to the hospital stay calm and nice

Because your attitude can make your nurses be like sugar or spice.

Epidural and pain meds depend on what you want to do

But I would definitely take the easier way if I were you.

Once labor starts your body leaks and does things you didn't know it could

On second thought...it will do things that you hoped it never would.

If the doctor breaks your water it will leak onto the sheet

But the nurse will clean it up before you and baby meet.

There is one thing that most women worry about in labor too

And that is pushing so hard that you accidentally go poo.

Don't worry about it if it happens and you make a mess

After your baby is born you will really care less.

The contractions will come quickly and may cause pain

Just keeping thinking about the love you are about to gain.

If you think you are a modest woman, be prepared not to be

During labor your "stuff" is on display for everyone to see.

If your baby is large your doctor may cut you down "there"

The cut will be much better than a painful tear.

Birth and Beyond
You push and push and push until you see your baby emerge

The memories of pain and gross fluids your brain will eventually purge.

Your baby is then laid up close to you on your chest

The bond you immediately feel is nothing short of being the best.

When your baby's gaze meets yours and it hears your voice

You know the gift of life is the ultimate gift and choice.

You may freak out as the doctor does the apgar test

Don't worry, they do it every day and they know what is best.

You may or may not circumcise due to your religious belief

Just having a healthy baby boy is a wonderful relief.

If you decide to breastfeed you will be put to a test

To teach your child to properly latch onto your breast.

One thing after childbirth that no woman wants or needs

Is that 10 day to 6 week heavy vaginal bleed.

After labor your baby is in diapers and you will be too

To catch all of that wonderful after pregnancy goo.

While you are in the hospital try to get lots of rest

At home, functioning on lack of sleep is put to the test.

Right after labor you are left with a saggy belly

Laugh hard and it will jiggle like a bowl of jelly.

The nurses will push on your tummy to make sure everything is out

Your tummy is sore and tired so it makes you want to shout!

Don't worry about your husband thinking you no longer look great

You just gave birth to his child so he loves that extra weight.

Afterwards it is sometimes difficult to go poo

So definitely take the medicine the doctor gives to you.

You might have stretch marks on your belly, thighs, and ass

But don't worry, with time the redness will pass.

If your baby cries your breast may leak milk quick

Sometimes it is a little bit, whereas others it's thick.

Post Partum depression may be something that you go through

So make sure to have friends and family near to support you.

When you get home everything for the two of you will be new

But even if you screw up, your baby will still love you.

Don't freak out if you think you did something wrong

Motherhood is new and you will learn as you go along.

Your family and friends will often try to tell you what to do

Listen to your maternal instinct and do what is right for you.

You will be so exhausted and you really need some sleep

But your mommy instinct will keep you awake to hear every baby peep.

So when your baby takes a nap you really should too

I know it will be hard when there is so much to do.

If you breastfeed your nipples will be at first sore to the touch

But you really won't care because you love your child so much.

Breastfeeding might make your nipples crack and bleed

So nipple creams will be something you definitely need.

When you start to wean from breastfeeding it may be hard to let go

Because as a mother it is a bond that only you and your child know.

Brushing your teeth and taking showers are a luxury from your past

If you get to do them now you better do them fast!

Your baby's first poops are really black and thick

Get ready mom, most of the time the poop makes daddy sick.

You may even see your husband gravel, plead and beg

To not clean up the poop creeping down your babies leg.

One thing that can be gross and expensive is a baby diaper rash

Keep your baby clean or the creams will cost you a lot of cash.

When changing a little boy, quickly cover the "wee-wee"

If you don't, you might end up with a face full of "pee-pee".

Diapers start to look like the baby food they eat

Cleaning up a green pea diaper isn't necessarily a treat.

Never leave your baby alone on the changing table, couch or bed

It could cause a very serious injury to little ones head.

Temperature is taking easier in the rear

So lube it up, smile and stick it in without fear.

To prevent SIDS, laying your baby on its back is best

Each night your maternal paranoia is put to the test.

Some people are against using a blanket swaddled tight

If you don't swaddle, get used to very little sleep at night.

You can bathe your baby in the tub or even in the sink

Either location will be more fun that you could ever think!

When giving a bath beware of water in the ears

And buy baby shampoo that doesn't cause tears.

Baby nails grow at a quick pace

Keep them short so they don't scratch their little face.

Your baby may need to eat every two hours to be happy and fine
Making, Cleaning and warming bottles requires an assembly line.

Make sure you take a pacifier for your child wherever you go

Keep them clean and sanitized so bacteria and germs don't grow.

Being quiet while your baby sleeps is a big mistake

Because then the tiniest noise they hear will make them wake.

Your heart will break when they get shots and cry

Especially when they look up at you like, "mommy why?"

Sometimes is takes a while to find the right pediatrician

They need to be knowledgeable and have tricks like a magician.

Crying and pulling at the ears raises the question

Does my little angel have an ear infection?

Little colds and ear infections may happen a lot to your baby

The constant doctor visits and worry might make you a little crazy.

Carrying your baby in its car seat can tone your arms faster

Be careful in stores, swinging it can cause a messy disaster.

Sending our a birth announcement to brag can be so much fun

There are so many excellent choices it is hard to choose just one!

You love your baby so much you want it attached to your hip

Be careful of the wobbly, unstable head, because it might bust your lip.

Activity mats will help your children learn to roll front to back

And when it comes to road trips to grandmas they are easy to pack.

When your baby has bad gas it will scream and yelp

Holding, burping and bouncing on your knee might help.

If you have pets let them love on your child

They will protect him/her from others, tame and/or wild.

Chest carriers and slings are great for going to the zoo or the mall

Its comforting to know you can move your hands freely and your baby won't fall.

It is so amazing when your baby shows you it's first smile

It will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy for more than just a while.

They smile and giggle when you play hide and seek

It's a game you now want to play all day and all week.

Cherish each and every boggery and slobbery kiss

As they grow up it will be one thing you will surely miss.

If your child has a special blanket or lovee always buy two

Because if you lost one then what the heck would you do?

When it comes to education start out right

By reading to your child each and every night.

Put all your extra change in a piggy bank for school

They think the jingling change sound is really cool.

Take your child to see Santa and the Easter Bunny

Those pictures are important and often times funny.

Instead of one bag for a weekend trip you now need about eight

One day your child will decide to take off and crawl

So make sure to block the stairs and all the outlets in the wall.

The choice of baby formula will be up to you

Most come in powder, liquid and travel packs too.

As your child grows there will be lots of toys and noise

Getting you ready for slumber parties of little girls or boys

Storing your child's outgrown clothes can sometimes be sad

Just remember the memories that all those clothes had.

Use the baby book to write down each and every milestone

So you can look back and reminisce when you child is full grown.

A digital camera is something that you will always want to pack

Catch every "first" you can because you can't get those back.

Pregnancy Complaints
With pregnancy there are many issues and complaints

And sometimes discomfort and physical restraint.

You might have stretching, soreness and an occasional spot

Acne, bloating, heartburn and sweating because you are hot.

You can be tired, dizzy, swollen and constantly have to pee

Have headaches, cravings, rashes and always be thirty.

Constipation, discharge and skin with a horrible itch

These crazy symptoms can make any woman a witch.

After all this, when the 40 weeks is through

Each and every moment will have been worth it for you.

Every woman's pregnancy is different in many ways

So sit back, relax and enjoy each and every day.

Congratulations on your bundle of joy!
